Tackling child obesity

Childhood Obesity is a global (World Health Organisation, 2016) and national (Department of Health, 2010) concern. Its causes are complex (Butland et al, 2007), and it is considered one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century.

Tackling childhood obesity is fundamental in realising a child's right to a healthy life (United Nations, 2013). Given the scale and cost of obesity to the individual (Health and Social care Information Centre, 2011), and the significant burden on the family, healthcare system, employers, and society as a whole (Scarborough et al, 2011), prevention of childhood obesity must be a high priority for the whole childcare workforce.
